Our Therapeutic Approach: Psyche, Somatic, and Soul

At Sacred Bonds Counseling & Wellness, our care is organized around three interconnected dimensions of healing: Psyche, Somatic, and Soul. Together, they describe how we tend to the mind, the body, and the deepest layers of who you are, so that change is not just temporary symptom relief but a shift in how you experience yourself and your relationships.

Psyche – Healing the Emotional Story

Psyche is the Greek word for "soul", while psychopathology translates to the "expression of the suffering of the soul".

The Psyche aspect of our work focuses on trauma resolution, emotional insight, and the cognitive patterns that shape how you feel, think, and relate. We explore how early attachment, family history, and life events have shaped your internal world, and we work with you to untangle beliefs, emotions, and relational templates that no longer serve you.

Our Psyche-focused care draws from psychoanalytic and Jungian perspectives, attachment theory (inspired by Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Dr. Gabor Maté), and trauma-focused modalities such as EMDR, IFS, and RTM. Here we address:

  • Trauma resolution and PTSD
  • Anxiety, depression, and shame
  • Relationship patterns and attachment wounds
  • Meaning, identity, and the narratives you carry

The goal is not just to “manage symptoms,” but to transform the emotional constructs and internal stories that keep you stuck, so you can move with more clarity, self-compassion, and freedom.

Somatic – Body Work & Nervous System Retraining

The Somatic aspect of our work recognizes that the body “remembers” what the mind alone cannot resolve. Stress and trauma often show up as chronic tension, numbness, hypervigilance, shutdown, or cycles of anxiety and exhaustion. We gently help you reconnect with your body as an ally in healing, not just a problem to be managed.

Influenced by work such as Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score, we honor that trauma is held in the nervous system, muscles, breath, and gut—not just in thoughts and memories. At Sacred Bonds, we integrate body‑based care into therapy so that your system can complete what it could not do during times of overwhelm.

Somatic care at Sacred Bonds focuses on:

  • Learning to notice and safely be with bodily sensations
  • Supporting the nervous system to spend more time in a regulated, parasympathetic state, instead of a default heightened fight/flight (sympathetic) response
  • Gradually retraining patterns of hyperarousal, collapse, or dysregulation

We may incorporate:

  • Fascia-focused stretching and yoga-like movements
  • Gentle, mindful movement and breath practices
  • Body-based awareness techniques that help release “stuck” survival responses

Because physical health and mental health are intertwined, we also briefly review core nutritional aspects of daily life (diet patterns, hydration, and basic nourishment) to consider whether any deficiencies or imbalances might be contributing to emotional symptoms. We encourage you to work closely with your medical providers and, when meaningful to you, non-traditional or culturally rooted healers as part of a whole-person plan, so that mind, body, and spirit are moving in the same direction.

Soul – Remembering Who You Truly Are

The Soul aspect of our work is about deeper identity, meaning, and purpose. Many clients arrive knowing they are “getting by” but feel disconnected from who they truly are or who they were meant to be. Maybe you've had thoughts like “I’m surviving, but I don’t feel like myself,” or “I’ve lost touch with who I was meant to be.” Trauma, attachment injuries, and chronic stress can cover over a person’s true self with layers of protection, performance, or numbness.

In this dimension of care, we create space to:

  • Rediscover who you are beneath survival strategies and old roles
  • Explore values, calling, and what feels truly life-giving
  • Integrate spiritual, cultural, and ancestral perspectives (as desired by you)
  • Support you in moving toward a more authentic and connected life

Soul work is not about imposing a belief system; it is about honoring your unique story and helping you reclaim the parts of yourself that have been lost, silenced, or exiled. As Psyche and Somatic healing unfold, this deeper layer of Soul often becomes more accessible, allowing you to expand into your potential rather than staying defined by your past.

How This Translates Into Services

Using the Psyche–Somatic–Soul framework, we offer:

  • Individual therapy for children, teens, and adults
  • Parent and caregiver counseling and coaching
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Trauma‑focused therapies (EMDR, IFS, RTM)
  • Somatic and body‑based work, including nervous system retraining and gentle movement
  • Attachment‑focused care to strengthen the bond between caregivers and children

Each treatment plan is tailored to you and may draw from all three dimensions—Psyche, Somatic, and Soul—so that your healing is integrated, sustainable, and aligned with who you are becoming.
