Experience, setting, and services

Sacred Bonds Counseling & Wellness is led by Alejandro “Alex” Abarca, LCSW, who brings over 20–25 years of mental health experience and supervision of a team of associates. We offer in-person sessions in Sonora and secure online therapy for clients who prefer or require telehealth.

Services include:

  • Individual therapy for children, teens, and adults.
  • Parent consultation and caregiver coaching focused on attachment, regulation, and development.
  • Couples and family therapy to improve communication, safety, and connection.
  • Trauma and PTSD treatment, including exploratory, depth, and attachment-based methods.

Our Services & Approach

At Sacred Bonds Counseling & Wellness, we organize our care around three interconnected dimensions of healing: Psyche, Somatic, and Soul. This whole‑person approach helps you understand not only what we offer, but how we work—tending to mind, body, and the deeper self so change is real and lasting.

We serve children, teens, adults, couples, and families, with a special focus on the sacred bond between parent/guardian and child. Our goal is to strengthen and repair attachment so that children and adults can become as resilient, grounded, and fully alive as possible.

Psyche – Healing the Emotional Story

The Psyche aspect of our work focuses on trauma resolution, emotional insight, and the patterns that shape how you feel, think, and relate. We explore how early attachment, family history, and life events have formed your inner world, and we help you untangle beliefs and emotional constructs that no longer serve you.

We draw from:

  • Psychoanalytic and Jungian therapy
  • Attachment theory (including the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté)
  • Trauma‑focused modalities such as EMDR, IFS, and RTM

Here we address:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety, depression, and shame
  • Relationship patterns and attachment wounds
  • Meaning, identity, and the narratives you carry

The aim is not just to “manage symptoms,” but to transform the underlying emotional and cognitive patterns that keep you stuck, so you can move with more clarity, self‑compassion, and freedom.

Somatic – Body Work & Nervous System Retraining

The Somatic aspect recognizes that the body “remembers” what the mind alone cannot resolve. Stress and trauma often show up as chronic tension, numbness, hypervigilance, shutdown, or cycles of anxiety and exhaustion. We gently help you reconnect with your body as an ally in healing, not just something to push through.

Somatic care at Sacred Bonds focuses on:

  • Learning to notice and safely be with bodily sensations
  • Retraining the nervous system so that your parasympathetic (“rest and restore”) system can engage more often, instead of living in a default heightened fight/flight (sympathetic) state
  • Gradually shifting patterns of hyperarousal, collapse, or dysregulation

We may incorporate:

  • Fascia‑focused stretching and yoga‑like movements
  • Gentle, mindful movement and breath practices
  • Body‑based awareness techniques that help release “stuck” survival responses

Influenced by work such as Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score, we honor that trauma is held in the nervous system, muscles, breath, and gut—not just in thoughts and memories. At Sacred Bonds, we integrate body‑based care into therapy so that your system can complete what it could not do during times of overwhelm.

Because physical and mental health are deeply linked, we also briefly review key nutritional aspects of daily life (overall diet patterns, hydration, and basic nourishment) to consider whether underlying deficiencies or imbalances may be contributing to emotional symptoms. We encourage you to explore these medical and nutritional dimensions in close collaboration with your primary medical providers and, when meaningful to you, non‑traditional or culturally rooted healers. This allows mind, body, and spirit to move in the same direction, rather than working at cross‑purposes.

Soul – Remembering Who You Truly Are

The Soul aspect of our work is about identity, meaning, and purpose. Many clients arrive knowing they are “getting by,” but feel disconnected from who they truly are or who they were meant to be. Trauma, attachment injuries, and chronic stress can cover over the true self with layers of protection, performance, or numbness.

In this dimension of care, we create space to:

  • Rediscover who you are beneath survival strategies and old roles
  • Explore values, calling, and what feels genuinely life‑giving
  • Integrate spiritual, cultural, and ancestral perspectives (when you desire this)

Support you in moving toward a more authentic and connected life

Soul work is not about imposing a belief system. It is about honoring your unique story and helping you reclaim parts of yourself that have been lost, silenced, or exiled. As Psyche and Somatic healing unfold, this deeper layer often becomes more accessible, allowing you to expand into your potential rather than remain defined by your past.

How This Translates Into Services

Using the Psyche–Somatic–Soul framework, we offer:

  • Individual therapy for children, teens, and adults
  • Parent and caregiver counseling and coaching
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Trauma‑focused therapies (EMDR, IFS, RTM)
  • Somatic and body‑based work, including nervous system retraining and gentle movement
  • Attachment‑focused care to strengthen the bond between caregivers and children

Each treatment plan is tailored to you and may draw from all three dimensions—Psyche, Somatic, and Soul—so that your healing is integrated, sustainable, and aligned with who you are becoming.
